The simple reason I believe it’s not really worth investing in a single traditional career has to do with development in the 21st century and the future of machines. It has been said before but it’s worth repeating that adaptability has been ranked as the single most important trait to thrive in the 21st century. While this is not necessarily an invitation to become a hardcore generalist or polymath, it is extremely important that people, especially young people, revise their traditional views about career development.

The most important evidence comes from the fact that robots are increasingly stealing jobs away from humans. The high-end predictions regarding the future of AI and machine intelligence mean a threat to the labor-intensive jobs and even the ones involving natural human intelligence. Together with other reasons, this accounts for the growing discussion on the subject of a Universal Basic Income. Additionally, over-specialization in species has been supposed to lead to mass extinctions.

As such, you want to make sure that you plan in the light of the above knowledge. The downside to increasing automation is that people will lose jobs. But there’s also an upside. If an idea like that of Universal Basic Income is implemented in the face of people losing their jobs, people will become empowered to do more interesting and meaningful things, ultimately. Again, the value of hobbies and passions will go through the roof, accompanied with the creation of ample leisure time. For example, creative work will soar in its intrinsic value. Likewise, entrepreneurial activity will also likely hit its peak.

Sure, a common baseline income may have its own downsides that are difficult to foresee yet. And yes, I am not a futurist either. Maybe, nothing as such will happen. And much like our predictions a hundred years ago, we'll be proven wrong about the future of job markets.

But with that said, I think it’s up to each one of us to choose even in the face of this rapidly changing world. And it is my duty to acquaint you with these possibilities so that you can make a wiser choice for yourself.
